ABSTRACT

The pandemic led to a pause in routine breast screening in the UK, with up to one million not being offered appointments (Breast Cancer Now, Almost one million women in UK miss vital breast screening due to COVID-19, 2022). However, according to a Nuffield report, even before this, breast cancer screening in the UK had yet to reach its 'optimal performance standard of 80%' (Nuffield, Cancer screening-quality watch, 2022). In usual times, this has meant that with screening rates in excess of 70%, over two million women have been screened annually in the UK. However, breast cancer is also the most common cancer in women in the UK (Office for National Statistics, Cancer registration statistics, 2017), with 85% survival 5 years after diagnosis (Office for National Statistics, Cancer survival in England - adults diagnosed 2019) and it remains clear that screening can help reduce breast cancer mortality (Office for National Statistics, Cancer registration statistics, 2017). So why would 25% or more fail to accept an invitation for a routine mammogram which may ultimately help save their lives? This chapter considers a range of psychological factors relevant to understanding this phenomenon and hopefully bring about a positive change. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2015, 2022. ABSTRACT

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the sport industry has contended with stoppages of play and interrupted revenue streams. With sport beginning to "return to normal,” there is uncertainty about the safe return of spectatorship and how live-event attendees perceive safety and precautionary measures amid a serious health emergency. The purpose of this study was to assess golf consumers' perceptions of following COVID-19 preventative measures at a small-scale professional golf event in Canada, and how these perceptions may influence their future event attendance. The results from a multiple linear regression analysis indicated that perceived benefits of COVID-19 vaccination and self-efficacy of following preventative measures significantly and positively influenced golf spectator's consideration of attending an event where these measures are enforced, while the perceived barriers of mask wearing significantly and negatively influenced attendance consideration. This has several practical implications for event management practitioners planning and hosting an event amid the COVID-19 pandemic. © Copyright 2023 Cognizant, LLC.

ABSTRACT

For a public health campaign to succeed, the public sector is expected to debunk the misinformation transparently and vividly and guide the citizens. The present study focuses on COVID-19 vaccine misinformation in Hong Kong, a non-Western society with a developed economy and sufficient vaccine supply but high vaccine hesitancy. Inspired by the Health Belief Model (HBM) and research on source transparency and the use of visuals in the debunking, the present study examines the COVID-19 vaccine misinformation debunking messages published by the official social media and online channels of the public sector of Hong Kong (n = 126) over 18 months (1 November 2020 to 20 April 2022) during the COVID-19 vaccination campaign. Results showed that the most frequently occurring misinformation themes were misleading claims about the risks and side effects of vaccination, followed by (non-)effectiveness of the vaccines and the (un)-necessity of vaccination. Among the HBM constructs, barriers and benefits of vaccination were mentioned the most, while self-efficacy was the least addressed. Compared with the early stage of the vaccination campaign, an increasing number of posts contained susceptibility, severity or cues to action. Most debunking statements did not disclose any external sources. The public sector actively used illustrations, with affective illustrations outnumbering cognitive ones. Suggestions for improving the quality of misinformation debunking during public health campaigns are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety is common during the perinatal period and despite effective treatments being available, many women with perinatal anxiety disorders experience barriers when accessing treatment. AIMS: The aims of the current study were to explore women's perceived barriers to treatment uptake; cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) treatment delivery preferences; and the utility of the Health Belief Model (HBM) in predicting intention to seek psychological help for women with perinatal anxiety symptoms. METHOD: This study employed a cross-sectional design consisting of women with self-reported anxiety in the perinatal period. A total of 216 women (Mage=28.53 years; SD=4.97) participated in the study by completing a battery of online self-report measures. RESULTS: The results indicated that the most salient barriers to accessing care were: (1) the cost of treatment, (2) wanting to solve the problem on their own, and (3) thinking the problem would go away without treatment. Group-delivered CBT was the least acceptable treatment method, while face-to-face individual CBT was the most acceptable treatment method. The HBM variables predicted approximately 35% of the variance in help-seeking intention. DISCUSSION: This study has important implications for the delivery of psychological care in the perinatal period and may be used to improve treatment uptake.

ABSTRACT

Acceptance of the SARS-CoV-2) COVID-19( vaccine is a very important factor to keep health workers safe. The study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of intention to receive the COVID-19 vaccine using a health belief model among health workers in Iran The study was a tools design study that was conducted in the period from February to March 2020, Iran Questionnaire items were designed using text review. The sampling method was multi-stage. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, confirmatory and exploratory factor analysis at a 95% confidence level using SPSS software version 16. The designed questionnaire had an appropriate content validity and internal consistency. Also, the exploratory factor analysis showed that a 5-factor structure was extracted and confirmatory factor analyses revealed that the conceptual five-factor structure of the measure had good fit indices. Reliability was evaluated using internal consistency. Cronbach Alpha coefficient was .82 and the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) was .9. It can be concluded that the instrument designed in the preliminary stage of psychometrics properties had good validity and reliability indicators. Also, the constructs of the health belief model well explain the determinants of the intention to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at the individual level.

ABSTRACT

Aims: The purpose of the study was to examine the intention of the health ambassadors to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, and investigate predictors of intention using the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and health belief model (HBM). Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive study conducted on 500 health ambassadors. Simple randomized sampling was applied to select the participants. We called the participants and asked them to fill out our 28-item questionnaire. Univariate analyses were used to examine relationships between dependent and independent variables. We used the independent t-test to measure the relationship between quantitatively independent variables and the Chi-square or Fisher's exact test to measure the relationship between qualitative independent variables. Finally, significant independent variables were entered into a hierarchical logistic regression model and the results were interpreted. Results: Overall, 44.8% (224) of participants reported that they have the intention to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The significant demographic predictors include age, having a chronic disease, Having COVID-19 in the last year, and perceived health status. According to the HBM, the dimensions of perceived susceptibility, perceived benefits, and cues to action. According to the TPB, the dimensions of the subject norm, perceived behavior control, and self-efficacy were significant predictors of vaccination. Conclusion: According to the low rate of COVID-19 vaccination, health educational programs together with encouraging/reinforcing programs may change perceived susceptibility, perceived benefits, perceived behavioral control, and intention. It is better to use various kinds of sources to implement the educational program.

ABSTRACT

PurposeWith the advent of the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic, there is a need to analyse the scenario of panic buying (PB) behaviour of the customers which was evident in the first wave. This paper aims to examine the PB scenario as well as the moderating effect of past buying experience (PBE) on PB in the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Design/methodology/approachThis study is based on the theories of stimulus-organism-response model and the competitive arousal model. Based on these theories, this paper investigates how panic situation created by external stimuli such as perceived scarcity (PS), perceived risk (PR), news in media (NM) and social learning affect the perceived arousal (PA) among people which in turn influence the PB behaviour of customers. Data were collected from 253 customers from different parts of India. Structural equation modelling is used to analyse the moderating effect of PBE on the PB in the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic. FindingsThe results indicate that the PS, PR and NM continue to be strong predictors of a buyer for PA. However, the PB is not reinforced by the moderation effect of PBE. Research limitations/implicationsThis paper investigates the consumers' PB behaviours in the wake of third wave of COVID-19 pandemic which add to the existing literature of COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, this study also examines how previous buying experience can moderate the PB behaviour of the customers in subsequent phases of COVID-19 pandemic. This supports the potential effectiveness of self-regulation as an intervention strategy for reducing PB behaviours during the COVID-19 pandemic. Practical implicationsThis study emphasises the impact of external stimuli like PS, PR and media coverage on PB behaviour, marketers and policymakers should manage to avoid triggers. Although PBE may not moderate PB during a pandemic, it can play a significant role in future buying behaviour. Anticipating potential triggers and designing effective marketing strategies that cater to customers' needs can help manage PB behaviour during disasters or pandemics. In addition, promoting conscious consumption awareness and self-regulation practices among customers can help manage PB behaviour, benefit the environment and society and make customers more responsible buyers. Originality/valueTo the best of the authors' knowledge, this study examines the PB behaviour of customers during the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic for the first time. This study also investigates the moderating effect of PBE on the PB behaviour of customers during a pandemic which is new and significant that extends the literature on PB behaviour during a pandemic.

Intro: To combat the newly emerging pandemic (Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)) different preventive measures are advised. World Health Organization recommended vaccination as an important intervention for ending this pandemic. This study aims to understand the willingness and acceptability to take the vaccine using the health belief model. Method(s): A cross-sectional study was conducted during the period January to February 2021 in an urban area of Khartoum, Sudan. The study reached 580 adult individuals. Chi-squire test was used to test associations, univariate and multivariate binary logistic regression was used to identify the predictors. Finding(s): The Majority of the participants mentioned that they had never been infected by COVID-19 before. (57.4%) believed that they are at risk of infection and most of them did not agree that they are more susceptible to the infection than other people. (83.1%) disagreed that covid-19 complications will be severe for people of their age. (92.6%) of them have heard about the vaccine. (36.9%) of the participants doubted the vaccine effectiveness and (203, 35.0%) believed that it is not safe for them to be vaccinated. (62.9%) of the participants mentioned, they are willing to take the vaccine. Age, perceived susceptibility, being less concerned about getting the disease, perceived vaccine effectiveness and safety, using the vaccine by other people, and doctor advice were significantly predicting the willingness to take the vaccine. Conclusion(s): Though most of the participants were willing to take COVID-19 vaccine, many factors were associated and predicted this willingness. These factors should be considered when setting policies and activities to enhance the uptake of the vaccine.Copyright © 2023

ABSTRACT

PurposeThe paper examines the ‘Intention to Receive the COVID-19 Vaccines' or IRV from three perspectives: the health belief model, behavioural economics, and institutional quality.Design/methodology/approachThis study provides quantitative analysis by applying Chi-squared test of contingencies, paired sample t-tests, exploratory factor analysis, and multiple linear regression (stepwise method) on the data collected from 591 respondents mainly from Malaysia.FindingsThe results show that Perceived Benefits, Perceived Barriers, Perceived Susceptibility, Herding, and Institutional Quality play roles as predictors of IRV. Perceived Benefits play the most crucial role among the predictors and Perceived Barriers is the least important predictor. People have the herding mentality after being exposed to information encouraging such behaviour.Originality/valueThis study reveals that the respondents changed their behaviour in different circumstances when exposed to information that incorporates the effect of herding. Herding mentality, the effectiveness of government authorities, and regulatory quality have become important factors in enriching public health policies and the effectiveness of interventions.

Objectives: This study examined the effectivity of subsystem components in community which could accept the acceleration of Covid-19 vaccine in Polman Region, therefore it becomes information for decision makers to create better health service management which is equal for everyone. Methods: this study applied mix method exploratory design which was conducted in two respective phases: qualitative and quantitative study. Qualitative study was conducted through focus group discussion on 3 target groups (primary, secondary and tertiary) to identify themes, ideas, perspectives, and believes, which became part of quantitative study to be explored. In quantitative study, 133 respondents were recruited from two boarding schools in the target area. Indepth interview and Focus group Discussion were used to collect data in the qualitative method. Quantitative study used descriptive statistics to describe information with frequency distribution. Results: The main results prove that there were relations between the variables found in the two methods which were significant and there was no internal conflict between the qualitative and quantitative findings. The result of the analysis found that the vaccine acceleration model which can be carried out namely involving local organizations and social groups in the COVID-19 information education system as well as taking preventive measures such as vaccination, and it will also be very effective if there were social relationships between individuals who were able to disseminate information about the importance of maintaining health protocols and also to conduct vaccinations in every level of society that could increase trust and follow-up for those who were still doubt about COVID-19 or about government's recommendation for vaccination. Conclusions: We conclude that each dimension of the social ecology and Health Belief Model was found to be consistent in both qualitative and quantitative research findings. ABSTRACT

Digital health interventions have become an essential component of every public health system since the COVID-19 pandemic. 'eSanjeevani OPD - Stay at Home OPD' is a telemedicine system that connects doctors and patients launched as part of the Ayushman Bharat project of the Indian government. This study analyses various factors affecting the intention to use eSanjeevani. A theoretical model integrating the health belief model and the theory of reasoned action was framed and empirically tested. Responses were collected using a survey questionnaire(n=248). A partial least square-structural equation modeling was used to analyze the linkages between the constructs. Perceived susceptibility and benefits were found to be the most contributing variables. Attitude has a significant mediating effect on the intention to use eSanjeevani. © 2023 IEEE.

Purpose of study Government interventions, such as mandating the use of masks and social distancing, play a crucial role in controlling the spread of disease during a pandemic. Currently, there is a disconnect between policy and public adherence. The Health Belief Model states health initiatives will be successful if they can target perceived barriers, benefits, self efficacy, and threats. Our goal was to explore the roles of education, income, and country on misperceptions, risk perceptions and personal risk perceptions about COVID-19. Methods used The data used in this study were supplied by Pennycook et, al. Data were extracted from three pre-registered surveys conducted by the polling firm Prolific. Binary logistic regressions were conducted to investigate the roles country, education, and income had on outcome variables. Summary of results Across the United States (USA), Canada, and United Kingdom (UK), individuals in the highest income quartile were significantly less likely to hold misperceptions (OR=0.61) and less likely to perceive personal risk (OR=0.38) regarding COVID-19 compared to individuals in the lowest income quartile. When comparing these income quartiles in the USA, the difference in perceived risk was heightened (OR=0.21). Citizens of the UK were more likely to have risk perceptions compared to citizens of the USA (OR=1.50). Citizens of Canada were less likely to perceive personal risk compared to citizens of the USA (OR=0.40). Conclusions Public health initiatives can induce maximal behavior change if they successfully target perceived barriers, benefits, self efficacy and threats. Proper risk perception and understanding of COVID-19 is necessary in order for the public to adhere to government initiatives. People of the lowest income quartiles were shown to have more misperceptions and personal risk perceptions across all three countries. This highlights the socioeconomic impact COVID- 19 has on the global community. Our findings support past research on the importance of education and income in affecting health perceptions and outcomes. Further research is needed to explore interventions to minimize misperceptions, accurately shape risk perception, and effectively communicate science.

Studies on the cessation of face mask use after a COVID-19 vaccine in patients with diabetes are not available, despite their greater predisposition to complications. We estimated the prevalence of cessation of face mask use after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine in patients with diabetes and identified which factor was most strongly associated with non-use. This was a cross-sectional study in patients with diabetes 18-70 years with at least one dose of vaccine against COVID-19 (n = 288). Participants were asked to respond face-to-face to a questionnaire in a primary care center. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and multivariate binary logistic regression were used for analyzing the association between vulnerability, benefits, barriers, self-efficacy, vaccine expectations (independent variables), and cessation of use (dependent variable), controlling for sociodemographic, smoking, medical, vaccine, and COVID-19 history. The prevalence of cessation of face masks was 25.3% (95% CI 20.2, 30.5). Not feeling vulnerable to hospitalization increased the odds of non-use (adjusted OR = 3.3, 95% CI 1.2, 8.6), while perceiving benefits did the opposite (adjusted OR = 0.4, 95% CI 0.2, 0.9). The prevalence was low, and only two factors were associated with the cessation of face mask use after COVID-19 vaccination in patients with type 2 diabetes.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Based on the health belief model and theory of planned behavior, this study investigated how age group (adolescence and emerging adulthood) moderated the relative effects of perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, and subjective norms on preventive behavior against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS: This secondary data analysis utilized data from adolescents (n=272) and emerging adults (n=239). Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was performed to test the moderating effect of age group on the relationships among variables. RESULTS: Higher perceived susceptibility (ß=.21, p<.001), perceived severity (ß=.14, p=.002), subjective norms (friends) (ß=.26, p<.001), subjective norms (parents) (ß=.44, p<.001), and subjective norms (schools) (ß=.28, p<.001) enhanced COVID-19 preventive behaviors. Moderated regression analysis showed that subjective norms (friends and school) impacted preventive behavior in adolescents more than in emerging adults. CONCLUSION: Given the need to increase perceived susceptibility and severity among adolescents and emerging adults, these findings provide baseline data for designing effective COVID-19 prevention interventions that consider the developmental characteristics of different age groups. Interventions by health centers at universities can strengthen COVID-19 preventive behavior among emerging adults. As adolescents are influenced by friends, their peer roles must be strengthened to enhance adherence to COVID-19 preventive guidelines.

Introduction: Handwashing is the most effective preventive behavior for coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) infection. However, research has shown the lower handwashing behaviors among Korean adults. Objectives: This study aims to analyze factors associated with handwashing as a preventive behavior for COVID-19 infection based on the health belief model (HBM) and the theory of planned behavior (TPB) behavioral theories. Methods: This secondary data analysis utilized the Community Health Survey developed by Disease Control and Prevention Agency conducted in 2020. Sampling method was stratified and targeted 900 people living in the territory of each community public health center. In total, 228,344 cases were used in the analysis. Handwashing behavior, perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, subjective norm, and influenza vaccine uptake were used in the analysis. Regression analysis using weighing strategy by stratification and domain analysis was used. Results: Less washing hand was associated with older age (B = 0.01, p < .001), males (B = 0.42, p < .001), not receiving an influenza vaccine (B = 0.09, p < .001), perceived susceptibility (B = 0.12, p < .001), subjective norm (B = 0.05, p < .001), and perceived severity (B = -0.04, p < .001). Conclusion: While perceived susceptibility and social norm had positive association, perceived severity had a negative association with handwashing. Considering the Korean culture, creating a shared norm for frequent handwashing could be beneficial to promote handwashing rather than emphasizing the disease and its consequences.

Background: Although COVID-19 vaccines have been developed, the number of people willing to receive the vaccine has not yet reached the level for herd immunity. Using the health belief model with governmental information support, this study examined private self-consciousness in combination with other factors that influence the intention to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Materials and methods: The perceived susceptibility to and perceived seriousness of COVID-19, perceived benefits of and perceived barriers to the COVID-19 vaccine, governmental information support, private self-consciousness, and the intention to receive the vaccine were examined in 523 adults. The data were analyzed with partial least squares regression. Results: The results indicate that private self-consciousness reduces the effect of perceived susceptibility on the intention to receive the vaccine and the negative effect of the perceived barriers to receiving it on intention. Conclusion: The information provided by the public health department should focus on perceived seriousness and perceived benefits because they are not affected by private self-consciousness.

ABSTRACT

Since the onset of the pandemic, many governments have introduced behavioral measures to prevent and contrast the spread of COVID-19. The aim of this scoping review is to iden-tify the social-psychological predictors of the compliance to these behaviors. We conducted a search (mainly on PsycInfo) and identified 107 articles (to August 2022) that investigated the role of characteristics inherent to the individual (socio-demographics, personality and individual differences related to empathy, prosociality and morality) or related to their per-ception of the COVID-19 (fear, risk perception and other beliefs related to the COVID-19);the contribution of the social context (culture and social identification) and its perception (norms, and trust in the government);and the contribution of factors related to science communication (trust in science and conspiracy beliefs). This review offers an overview of the results of this research and discuss the theoretical and applied implications.

A comparative vignette-based experimental survey design incorporating various socio-psychological factors, linked to the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), the Health Belief Model (HBM) and the Domain-Specific Risk-Taking scale (DOSPERT) was carried out to test variations in eight travel-related COVID-19 protective measures on Swiss tourists' travel intentions. Among the tested measures, vaccination passports, surgical masks and quarantining are those that stand out the most, with surgical masks having the greatest acceptance and willingness to adopt while traveling.
